Summary

Sher-e-Punjab Restaurant in Mount Abu belongs to a chain of Punjabi restaurants that are located in every Indian city. They specialise in tandoori dishes and cook them with gusto. While this restaurant lacked ambiance it made up for it with good quality non-vegetarian dishes which were a delight to the palate. It’s worth coming here just for the good food.

Sher-e-Punjab Restaurant belongs to a chain of Punjabi restaurants in India. They are popular all over India for their delicious non-vegetarian dishes, especially their chicken tandoori dishes.  When we found out that there was a Sher-e-Punjab restaurant in Mount Abu we had to have dinner there.

The decor in this restaurant is nothing to write home about. There are tables with comfortable sofas that you can sink into. Some tasteful Indian art hangs on the walls and simple chandeliers hang from the ceiling. The decor is simple yet tasteful.

There seemed to be a shortage of staff that evening. It seemed the manager of the restaurant was providing the service as well. It was empty when we walked in but filled up with Indian families pretty quickly soon after. Nonetheless, our order was taken and our meals delivered to our table even though it took a little while longer than expected.

For dinner we ordered two non-vegetarian mains – Chicken Tikka Masala and Mutton Rogan Josh – with Tandoori rotis.

A Punjabi specialty, Chicken Tikka Masala is chicken tikka or chunks of chicken marinated in spices and yogurt, that is then baked in a tandoor oven, and served in a masala sauce. The sauce is creamy, spiced and orange-coloured. The sauce usually includes pureed tomatoes, cream and various spices. The sauce and chicken pieces are coloured orange with food dyes or turmeric powder, paprika powder or tomato purée.

We ordered half a plate of chicken tikka masala which gave us 8 pieces of chicken in the dish. We thought that the amount of chicken for half a dish was rather generous. The stand out for this dish was the chicken and the way it was cooked. The chicken had been marinated for a long time so the spices and flavours had infused really well into the chicken. Also the yogurt marinade had made the chicken really soft and tender. The sauce on the other hand was mild yet full of flavour. We could taste the tomatoes and the cream which really blended well together. The spices were mild not overpowering which is how I like this dish cooked.

Mutton Rogan Josh is an aromatic mutton dish of Persian origin, which is one of the signature recipes of Kashmiri (North Indian) cuisine. Rogan josh is derived from the word rogan meaning red color  and josh meaning passion or heat.

It consists of braised mutton chunks cooked in a gravy made from onions, yogurt, garlic, ginger and aromatic spices. Its characteristic brilliant red color traditionally comes from liberal amounts of dried Kashmiri chillies that have been de-seeded to reduce their heat; these chillies (whose flavor is similar to that of paprika) are considerably milder than the typical dried cayenne chillies of Indian cuisine. The recipe’s spiciness is one of fragrance rather than heat, and the traditional dish is mild enough to be appreciated by Western palates that may not have been conditioned to tolerate the heat of chilies.

The best part of this dish was the gravy which was cooked to perfection. The sauce was thick and had a lot of spice and flavour to it. While the mutton was well cooked, there wasn’t very much meat to the dish; most of the dish consisted of bones with some meat on the bones. It should be mentioned that whenever we ordered a mutton dish it ended up consisting mostly bones with hardly any meat. However, in this dish, the gravy made up for the absence of meat.

The Tandoori rotis at Sher-e-Punjab restaurant were superb. They were melt-in-the-mouth delicious and went really well with the meat dishes. Parts of the roti were crisp while other parts were soft and doughy. Dipping the bread into the sauce was lovely and we cleaned up the plates with the bread.

Sher-e-Punjab Restaurant is well known for serving good quality good at reasonable prices. They have a standard as most restaurant chains do and they live up to their reputation for delicious Tandoori dishes.
